Description of the study program
The master’s joint study programme, through its structure and content, fulfils the description of the study field 38 – Teaching and Educational Sciences. An integral part of the programme consists of courses of a pedagogical‑psychological nature. Within the pedagogical‑psychological core, the essential themes of the study field’s knowledge base are covered — systematic knowledge focused on phenomena of educational reality (related to the educational system, legal aspects, and curricular aspects of the future teaching profession). Students of the second cycle acquire advanced knowledge in pedagogical theory as well as in didactic approaches and concepts. In addition to pedagogical and didactic knowledge, students also gain extensive scientific expertise in the relevant educational discipline. They further develop their scientific, cultural, and linguistic literacy, and the methodological and methodological competencies required for the teaching profession.
The study programme Teaching of Psychology (in combination) (42 credits) is paired with a second subject specialisation (42 credits), and an integral part of the programme is the shared social‑science, pedagogical, and psychological foundation of teacher education (36 credits). The programme therefore comprises three inseparable components in which the student earns a total of 120 credits for compulsory and compulsory‑elective courses at the bachelor’s level.
The compulsory courses (eight in total) are designed to enable students to acquire extensive knowledge in school psychology, counselling in the school environment, working with diversity in schools, and in the didactics of psychology, while also developing the ability to apply this theoretical knowledge in practice. Compulsory courses include, for example, Didactics of Psychology, School Psychology, Career Counselling, and Coaching and Mentoring.
Pedagogical practice is also part of the compulsory structure: Pedagogical Practice 1 and Pedagogical Practice 2, which are completed for each subject specialisation. These practices take place during the periods specified in the academic calendar of the Faculty of Education of Comenius University.
The compulsory‑elective courses (ten in total) develop advanced knowledge and skills in psychology teaching, psychological counselling, and working with pupils in educational contexts. These include courses such as Crisis Intervention in Schools, Neuropsychology, Cognitive Psychology, and Psychology of Language, among others. The group of optional courses (five courses in total) complements the compulsory subjects by emphasising practical applications, especially in the areas of teacher mental health, well‑being, and the development of optimism. Examples include Fundamentals of Play Therapy for Teachers and Fundamentals of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) for Teachers, both aimed at strengthening graduates’ practical psychological literacy and equipping them with tools for working in an inclusive classroom. These courses also support the scientific development of interested students.
Applicants Requirements
The basic admission requirement for master’s studies is the completion of a first‑cycle study programme (a bachelor’s programme) in the same study programme (or in the corresponding subject specialisation).
If the number of applicants for the selected study programme exceeds the planned limit approved by the Academic Senate of the Faculty of Education, Comenius University, the ranking of admitted applicants will be determined on the basis of the weighted grade point average for the entire first‑cycle bachelor’s study, calculated only from completed courses, including the state examination.
All criteria for the given study programme, including detailed and specific requirements, are published on the faculty’s website in the section Study.
