Description of the Study Programme

The organisation of studies is based on a credit system, which gives students the opportunity to participate in the development of their own study plans. The student receives credits after successful completion of the course. The conditions which the student must fulfil during the study and for its proper completion are specified in the internal regulation VP No.1/2020 Study Regulations of PdF UK.

The study programme is directly related to the bachelor’s study programme Teaching English Language and Literature (combined). It consists of three components: the common social-scientific, pedagogical, and psychological basis of teaching (36 credits), the English Language and Literature approbation (42 credits) and the second approbation (42 credits). The study programme provides a wide variation of study paths depending on the student’s interest.

The curriculum specifies the sequence of time and the content of the courses/subjects,  the method of teaching, forms of assessment, and workload expressed in credits. The student determines his/her study plan for the following period of study by enrolment on the basis of clearly defined rules. S/he enrols for courses in such a composition (compulsory, compulsory elective, and elective courses) so that in the control stage of the study s/he fulfils the conditions for enrolment in the next part of the study.

The curriculum consists of 11 compulsory subjects (5 of which are profile subjects), the completion of which gives the student 33 credits, 16 compulsory elective subjects, for which s/he must obtain at least 9 credits (out of a total of 32 credits) and 3 elective subjects.
The compulsory subjects educate students in linguistic, didactic, literary, and intercultural aspects. At the same time, they provide them with the foundations for the further development of foreign language skills and general communicative competence. The compulsory elective subjects are divided into 5 groups (linguistics, literature, didactics, culture and history, and practical language) so that students can flexibly design their individual study plan in accordance with their interests. They allow students to deepen and broaden the knowledge and skills acquired in compulsory subjects. Students can supplement their credit composition with any number of credits for elective subjects. All subjects are taught in English (including the final thesis and its defence). All relevant information about individual courses (number of credits, scope and form of teaching, learning outcomes, assessment rules, course completion requirements, recommended semester, prerequisite courses, lecturers, study literature) is given in the Study Plan and in the Course Information Sheets.

The thesis topics address current issues in the relevant fields (linguistics, didactics, literature, realia, and interculture) in relation to the practise of English language teaching. In their formulation, priority is given to the graduate's profiling, the student's orientation towards a particular area of interest, as well as to current ongoing research projects.

The study programme is carried out in the facilities of PdF UK in Bratislava (Faculty of Education, Comenius University) at Šoltésovej 4, Moskovská 3, and Račianska 59 streets. The faculty has its own academic library. The availability of information resources is ensured through wireless connection in all faculty buildings. Students have unrestricted access to external resources of the university and to full-text databases.
PdF UK provides students with social and motivational scholarships, and the conditions for awarding scholarships are regulated by the Act on Higher Education No.131/2002, Coll. 96 (8 - 11) and the Scholarship Regulations of PdF UK.

PdF UK provides students with dormitory accommodation and accommodation-related services, such as meals, spiritual activities, sports activities, and medical care. There is also a free Psychological Counseling Centre at the university.

PdF UK (Faculty of Education, Comenius University) has the possibility to delegate students abroad for studies or internships within the framework of its partnerships, the Erasmus + programmes, and activities covered by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic. The results of education obtained at a foreign partner institution are recognised by the university. In PdF UK, the transfer of credits is regulated in the VP No.1/2020 Study Regulations of PdF UK.
