Description of the study programme

The Bachelor's study programme Teaching of Music Art in Combination is designed so that its graduate is professionally qualified to perform the profession of an assistant teacher, or assistant teacher, animator (lecturer) of leisure time, state and public administration worker for the relevant area. The graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme in Teaching of Music Art in Combination has knowledge, skills and competences in the field of music art, is equipped with basic knowledge in the field of music pedagogy, theory and history of music and is able to apply this knowledge to an appropriate extent in the music-educational process. He/she has fully developed musical competences, abilities and skills and is able to implement music-educational activities in educational practice.

The competences, knowledge and skills of a graduate of the Bachelor's degree, including transferable competences acquired during the studies, enable him/her to apply in professions requiring an appropriate level of communicative competences, cross-cutting knowledge of the field with a focus on pedagogical competences, broad knowledge and understanding in the specialised field of musical arts in combination, skills, an active way of acquiring knowledge in the context of the programme of study and competence in solving professional tasks, identifying and evaluating ethical, social and other related issues in the context of the programme of study in music arts combined, corresponding to level 6 of the Slovak Qualifications Framework. 

The subjects of the curriculum are designed to cover proportionally the topics of social-scientific, pedagogical and psychological basis of teaching and subject approbations. The compulsory subjects of the study programme in music teaching in combination cover the three basic areas of music education: music-pedagogical, music-theoretical and music-performance. The courses are both theoretical and applied, practical in nature. Course content emphasizes independent, creative and critical thinking, practical student performance and project-based methods, with the goal of holistic syncretic development of the student's personality. Required electives complement and develop required courses, according to the student's personal preferences. The state examination is conducted in the subject of the defence of the final thesis. The graduate of the Bachelor's degree of the study programme of combined study of the teaching of musical arts receives the academic degree of Bachelor. The first degree study programme is aimed, among other things, at continuing to the master's degree and obtaining full qualification for the performance of the professional activity of a teacher in the category of music education teacher. Students can complete part of their study plan abroad within the framework of several mobility programmes (ERASMUS, CEPUS, bilateral agreements, etc.).

 

STUDY PLAN

Requirements for applicants

The admission condition for applicants to the Bachelor's degree programme in the Combined Study Programme in Music Teaching is the completion of a complete secondary education with a secondary school leaving certificate. The required proof of the acquisition of education is an officially certified copy of the school leaving certificate. Applicants are admitted for a predetermined number of places. Applicants are selected on the basis of their secondary school results. The final ranking of applicants is determined by the total number of points obtained by the applicant according to the results of the secondary school-leaving examination. The faculty thus ascertains the applicant's general readiness to cope with the requirements of higher education, or on the basis of the results of an entrance examination of a type determined by the faculty, taking partly into account the results of secondary school studies. In this case, the weight of the entrance examination shall be at least ¾ of the total result of the admission procedure. Another condition for admission is the successful completion of a talent test. Candidates are admitted only for playing a musical instrument listed in advance, e.g. piano, violin, clarinet, guitar, flute and voice. The talent test consists of the following parts: 

 

  • playing a musical instrument - 2 compositions of different character,
  • verification of vocal abilities - 2 songs of a different character (folk or artificial),
  • diagnosis of musical abilities,
  • basic orientation in the current musical and cultural and social field,
  • interview on the applicant's motivations and expectations.

 

In the event of more applicants than the expected number of applicants admitted to a given study programme, the faculty reserves the right to select applicants according to the average of their marks in the final examination.

 

 

The graduate profile

The profile of the graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme Teaching of Musical Arts in Combination is defined in accordance with the description of the field of study Teaching and Educational Sciences, reflecting the qualification framework for the European Higher Education Area. According to the National Qualifications Framework of the Slovak Republic, the graduate will reach SKKR6 level. The graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme has knowledge, skills and competences in the field of musical arts, is equipped with basic knowledge in the field of music pedagogy, theory and history of music and is able to apply this knowledge to an appropriate extent in the music-educational process. He/she has fully developed musical competences, abilities and skills and is able to implement music-educational activities in educational practice. The graduate of the first degree of music teaching in combination is qualified to perform the profession of assistant teacher, or assistant teacher, animator (lecturer) of leisure time, state and public administration worker for the relevant area.

Knowledge

Graduate of the 1st degree in the study programme of combined music teaching:

 

  • knows the social-scientific and legislative contexts of institutional education,
  • knows psychological models of cognitive and personality development with application in educational settings,
  • knows the theoretical principles of creating and planning the educational process in secondary education,
  • knows and understands the basic historical and theoretical aspects of music education,
  • has a basic relevant knowledge of education and training in a broader philosophical and psychological context,
  • is familiar with the institutional socialisation process,
  • knows the principles of creating and designing pedagogical environments in primary and secondary education,
  • knows the organisational characteristics of the school system and the institutional rules of the school,
  • is oriented in music-pedagogical and music-theoretical disciplines, knows the theoretical background of music pedagogy, can identify the characteristic features of individual stylistic periods of the history of music and their cultural-historical context, knows music theory in terms of individual parameters of musical structure and their interrelationships,
  • is prepared to acquire full teaching competence in the form of a 2nd cycle of university studies.

 

Practical skills

Graduate of the 1st cycle of studies in the study programme of combined music teaching:

 

  • is able to navigate in pedagogical documentation and school legislation,
  • can actively use digital technologies to support the educational process,
  • can reflect on the individual components of the educational process in the school classroom, in the field of music education,
  • possesses basic structural skills in the intellectual, motor, creative-sensory plane,
  • is able to cooperate in solving professional projects in the field of music education,
  • is able to reflect the general-pedagogical characteristics of education and teaching in school practice,
  • is familiar with school legislation and school documents,
  • is able to organise pupils' activities, especially in extra-curricular school and extra-curricular activities,
  • knows the basics of playing the main musical instrument and works creatively with it,
  • sings intonationally pure, has mastered the basics of vocal technique,
  • can lead a vocal ensemble or choir

 

Competencies

Graduate of the 1st level of studies in the study programme of combined music teaching:

 

  • can present his/her abilities and skills in the field of music education,
  • knows how to make meaningful use of modern didactic technology,
  • knows the basics of pedagogical communication, individual and team work in solving professional and pedagogical problems,
  • can collaborate in problem solving and take responsibility for team results,
  • is able to coordinate sub-activities related to the profession,
  • can independently acquire new knowledge and actively expand his/her knowledge,
  • can plan and organise his/her own self-education,
  • can cooperate effectively with special educators, psychologists and other professionals,
  • has independent, creative, critical thinking.

 

 

Graduate employment

 

In accordance with the SKKR, a graduate of the first level (level 6 of the SKKR) will obtain a qualification and will be qualified for the following employment and occupation:

 

  • Teaching assistant
  • Animator (lecturer) of leisure time musical activities (ensembles) in leisure time centres, culture centres.

 

On the labour market the graduate will be employed as a pedagogical assistant in the field of informal music education:

 

  • state and public administration worker for the field of music culture,
  • assistant choirmaster, conductor and voice teacher in after-school choirs and ensembles,
  • assistant in vocal-instrumental ensembles and folklore ensembles.
