Description of the study programme

The student's study plan determines the time (recommended study paths) as well as the content sequence of courses (continuity of courses and their content), the method of teaching, forms of assessment of learning outcomes, workload expressed in credits. The student draws up the study plan on the basis of clearly defined rules in accordance with the conditions of the study programme and in accordance with the Study Regulations of the Faculty of Education of Comenius University in Bratislava. The student determines his/her study plan for the following period of study by enrollment. He/she enrolls in subjects of such credit value and in such composition (compulsory courses, compulsory elective courses and elective courses) that he/she can meet the conditions for enrollment in the next part of the study in the control stage of the study. In the academic year in which the student plans to leave the course of study, he/she shall enroll in courses of such credit value and in such a composition that, by successfully completing them, he/she will meet the conditions for leaving the course of study.

The student's study plan includes the composition of courses in the group of compulsory courses, compulsory elective courses and elective courses.

In the group of compulsory courses, the study plan includes a total of 12 courses for which the student receives a total of 43 credits. Ten courses are profile courses. The profile courses include two courses focused on the history of fine arts, where the student receives a basic orientation in the history of fine arts. Two courses focusing on the didactics of art education are profile courses and the student will gain a basic orientation in the field of artistic expression of children and young people and the possibilities of leisure-time art education. The course focusing on the basics of visual communication is a profile course and the student will acquire basic skills in working with vector graphics. Five subjects aimed at acquiring basic artistic skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, modelling and photography are profile subjects.

The compulsory courses include two courses that are not profile courses, the course Methodology of writing a professional text in art education is specifically aimed at acquiring the skill of writing professional texts with content focus on art education and the subject Drawing and Spatial Creation in Landscape is aimed at the implementation of art creation in the plein air.

Within the compulsory elective courses there are two groups of courses in the curriculum. In group A there are a total of four courses for which the student must obtain a minimum of 8 credits. The courses are not profile courses. They are aimed at developing further knowledge in the field of visual art contexts, in the field of art pedagogy, provide a basic orientation in reflective teaching within the didactics of art education and a basic orientation in the field of art therapy.

Group B includes a total of six subjects that are not profile subjects and the student will receive a minimum of 9 credits. In this part, the student has the opportunity to create his/her own study path according to which of the art disciplines is most beneficial for him/her and in which he/she is interested in improving. Included here are courses in drawing, printmaking, graphic design, painting photography and ceramics.

The individual components of the study programme build on each other, while providing the student with opportunities to choose and create his or her own study path.

The study programme is specific in its content and opportunities for students' self-realisation. At the same time, the study programme provides space for the study of students with specific educational needs, thus covering the inclusive philosophy of education.

The number of credits, the achievement of which is a condition for the proper completion of the first cycle of studies of the Bachelor's degree programme in Art Education in combination is 180 credits from all components of the study, which are - the common social-scientific, pedagogical and psychological basis of teaching (60 credits), one approbation (60 credits), the second approbation (60 credits).

The programme of study in the first cycle of studies with the title of art education in combination is structured in such a way that the student can obtain the appropriate number of credits, 180 credits in total. Of these, 60 credits must be obtained for the combined art education qualification:

  • in the apprenticeship of art education in combination it is necessary to obtain 43 credits in compulsory courses,
  • in compulsory elective courses, 8 credits must be obtained in group A and 9 credits in group B,
  • the group of elective subjects in the study programme in the apprenticeship of art education in combination is designed to allow the student to develop his/her personal preferences and the opportunity to develop his/her competences and interests, the student may obtain a maximum of 18 credits in the above group, which do not form part of the credits required for the proper completion of the study or part of the study,
  • the final thesis, which in the above programme is the Bachelor's thesis, is formally included in the general basis, however, the study programme of art education in combination has specificities resulting from the content focus of the programme,
  • the teaching practice forms an integral part of the study programme, is included in the general basis and two components and it is necessary to obtain a total of 4 credits for them,
  • the specificity of the study programme art education in combination is the form of practice, which is part of two profile courses, which are didactics of art education 1 and didactics of art education 2.

The specifics of the final thesis - bachelor thesis in the study programme of art education in combination:

  • in the bachelor's thesis, the student generally demonstrates the ability to independently acquire theoretical and practical knowledge and use it,
  • within the specifics of the study programme art education in combination, the bachelor thesis focuses on the processing of the topic in the theoretical field, in the possible artistic realization output and in the proposal of didactic application in non-formal art education,
  • the student has the right to adapt the formal aspect of the bachelor's thesis appropriately to the intention, he/she can also process the theoretical work with the proposal of artistic realization output and the proposal of didactic application in informal art education, or the theoretical-application work without artistic output but with a greater degree of didactic application in informal art education.

Specifics of the final thesis defence - the defence of the bachelor's thesis in the study programme of art education in combination has specifics resulting from the nature and content focus of the programme:

  • the defence of the bachelor's thesis is one of the state examinations,
  • the bachelor's thesis defence is a colloquial examination where the student demonstrates his/her knowledge and competence in relation to the topic of the bachelor's thesis and also in the context of the specifics of the study programme,
  • during the defence, the student demonstrates the ability to articulate his/her knowledge at the required level, also within the breadth of the content and profile of the bachelor's degree,
  • in the case of the defence of a bachelor's thesis consisting of an artistic output, the student demonstrates his/her skills and knowledge in the medium in which this part of the bachelor's thesis is realised.

The study programme is implemented in the premises of the Faculty of Education of Comenius University in Bratislava, the subjects of pedagogical practice are also carried out in the premises of training schools. The buildings of the Faculty of Education at Šoltésova 4 and Moskovská 3 are located in the centre of Bratislava, the building at Račianska 59 is located in the wider centre of Bratislava with easy accessibility and equipped infrastructure.

The Department of Art Education, providing the combined programme of art education, is located at Šoltésova 4, in Bratislava. The staff offices are located on the first floor.

Within the teaching process, research and support activities, each teacher has a computer, projector and relevant IT equipment at his/her disposal. All areas of the department (seminar rooms, offices) are covered by wired and wireless internet connection.

In the study programme of art education in combination are included subjects of pedagogical practice, in the provision of which participate teachers of primary and secondary schools of different types and focus, in cooperation with contractual partners of the faculty used also for other existing study programmes. Practical teachers provide the practical part of the educational activity, which is linked to the school environment.

By successfully completing the first level of the study programme Art Education in Combination, the student obtains a Bachelor's degree and a qualification corresponding to level 6 according to the Slovak Qualification Framework (SKKR). Proof of qualification is a university diploma (1st level), a certificate of state examination and a supplement to the diploma.

The qualification obtained by completing the first degree of the study programme 105535 Art Education in combination and the learning outcomes meet the sector-specific professional expectations for the performance of professions for which the SP prepares graduates as a priority, namely:

  • has general pedagogical and didactic knowledge at the level of synthesis,
  • has practical and methodological knowledge in the field of art education in combination, which serves as a basis for the practice of a pedagogical assistant,
  • can propose solutions to methodological and professional problems in the context of combined art education,
  • can modify general and professional knowledge in solving specific professional problems arising from the specifics of art education in combination,
  • can implement solutions to professional artistic problems in the context of art education in combination,
  • can creatively use methods, tools, instruments and materials of combined art education,
  • is characterised by independence in solving specific problems in the changing environment of school education
  • is able to plan his/her further education independently,
  • has autonomy and responsibility in decision-making in solving pedagogical situations of a teaching assistant in the context of art education,
  • has the ability to present his/her own opinions appropriately and professionally in the context of art education in combination,
  • is characterised by creative and flexible thinking within art education in combination.

Comenius University has the opportunity to send students abroad for study or internship in the framework of its partnerships (Utrecht Network, SYLFF, some bilateral agreements) to 63 foreign universities in over 30 countries in Europe and beyond. Even wider opportunities covering practically the whole world exist under other schemes, in particular under the Erasmus+ programme and activities under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Slovak Republic, implemented through SAIA.

The Department of Art Education has long been closed and thanks to which students can go on a study stay at a foreign university. On average, 1-2 students of the department go on mobility annually.

 

STUDY PLAN

Requirements for applicants

The admission requirement for applicants to the Bachelor's degree programme in Combined Art Education is the completion of a full secondary education with a matriculation diploma. A certified copy of the school leaving certificate is the required proof of education.

Applicants are admitted on the basis of an entrance examination.

Applicants are selected on the basis of the results of the aptitude test, taking into account, in part, the results of their secondary education. In this case, the weighting of the entrance examination shall be at least ¾ of the total admission result.

The admission examination is intended to demonstrate the applicant's serious interest in the field of study and the study programme, the level and depth of knowledge, skills and creative inventiveness for the study of a demanding study programme. The basic and essential prerequisite is the mastery of the basic means of artistic expression - drawing, painting and modelling. The student will be admitted to study after successfully completing the admission procedure.

The talent test is used to determine:

  • Determination of the candidate's state of knowledge and general overview of the field of visual arts and culture in the form of a test.
  • Practical artistic problem solving in the field of: drawing, painting and modelling.
  • An important part of the talent test is the presentation of a set of the applicant's home or school work. This means presentations of the best art works or projects carried out in the last 2 years prior to the examination, in the range of approximately 20 works. During the presentation of the works, there is room for oral debate with the members of the committee. It is recommended that the outputs are compiled in the form of a portfolio or presentation, which can be brought in digital or printed form. The original works should also be submitted if the realisation of the work allows it. These are mainly study drawings of at least 5 drawings.

Materials and aids for the practical part of the entrance exam (the student will bring to the entrance exam):

  • drawing paper and drawings (A2 format, about 5 pieces)
  • drawing and painting materials of your choice: pencils, charcoal, ore, crayons, pastel, tempera paints, watercolour paints...
  • approx. 1 kg of modelling material and modelling tools (spatulas, eyelets, clay, wax ...)
  • auxiliary material: rubber, fixative, adhesive tape, scissors, thumbtacks.

Time allowance for surface/area disciplines: 120 minutes
Time allowance for modelling: 90 minutes
Time allowance for the written test: 30 minutes  
Total: 240 minutes

In the event of more applicants than the expected number of applicants admitted to a given program, the faculty reserves the right to select applicants according to their grade point average on the final exam. Applicants are admitted to a predetermined number of places.

The graduate profile

The graduate profile is defined by:

  • European Higher Education Area (EHEA) descriptors,
  • reflects the full description of the field of study 38 Teaching and Educational Sciences, knowledge, skills and competences,
  • is in line with the latest scientific knowledge of the combined art education programme.

Graduates of the Bachelor's degree programme in Art Education Combined will obtain a degree according to the International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) - code 665. In terms of the level of the National Qualification Framework of the Slovak Republic - SKKR, the graduate obtains SKKR level 6.

The graduate has knowledge of the biological, psychological and social aspects of individual development, knows and understands the concept of the institutional socialisation process in a broader social scientific context. He/she knows the Slovak school system, the legal context and curricular contexts of the teaching profession, the structure and background of the profession. Possesses basic knowledge of the differences in the development of individuals resulting from their health or social disadvantages or their gifts and talents. Is able to use them in the implementation of the educational process in the conditions of inclusive education and upbringing. The graduate is able to cooperate effectively with special educators, psychologists and other professionals and follow their professional recommendations and conclusions.

In the subject area of art education in combination, he/she has a general outlook and masters the basic skills and values in the field of art education in combination, at the same time he/she understands the broader context of education and training. He/she is able to use his/her professional skills and knowledge as well as pedagogical knowledge in the planning and implementation of the educational process, especially in the field of interest and leisure activities. He/she is proficient in basic pedagogical communication skills and is able to navigate the organisational conditions of institutional education.

Theoretical knowledge

  • Graduate of the 1st degree of the combined study programme in art education:
  • knows the social scientific and legislative context of institutional education,
  • knows psychological models of cognitive and personality development with application in educational settings,
  • knows the theoretical principles of designing and planning the educational process in education,
  • knows and understands the basic historical and theoretical aspects of art education in combination,
  • is oriented in the topics of art history,
  • possesses basic theoretical knowledge in the field of classical art media, namely in drawing, painting, graphics, photography and spatial creation,
  • has basic theoretical knowledge in the field of visual communication,
  • is prepared to obtain full teaching competence in the form of a 2nd cycle of higher education.

Practical skills and abilities

  • Graduate of the 1st degree programme in combined art education:
  • can navigate in pedagogical documentation and school legislation,
  • can actively use digital technologies to support the educational process,
  • can analyse and reflect on the individual components of the educational process in the school classroom,
  • has basic structural skills (whether intellectual, motor, creative-sensory) in the field of art education in combination,
  • is able to collaborate on professional projects in the field of art education in combination,
  • is able to organise pupils' activities, especially in extra-curricular school and extra-curricular activities with a focus on art activities,
  • has basic practical skills in classical art media, namely drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and spatial design,
  • has basic practical skills in visual communication.

Additional knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Graduate of the 1st degree program in combined art education:
  • can organize and plan own education,
  • can present his/her abilities and skills in the field of combined art education,
  • knows how to make meaningful use of modern didactic technology in the field of combined art education,
  • knows the basics of pedagogical communication, individual and team work in solving professional and pedagogical problems in the field of art education in combination,
  • knows how to organise his/her own learning and his/her continuing education.

Graduate employment

Application of the graduate of the bachelor's degree programme in art education in combination focuses on educational activities aimed at developing creative abilities and skills of pupils in the time outside the classroom in the field of children's and young people's leisure time use.
A graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme in combined art education is mainly employed as a teaching assistant.
On the labour market, the graduate will be employed as a teaching assistant in the field of non-formal art education.  
A teaching assistant in art education is qualified to assist in pedagogical situations in art education classes and in extracurricular activities. He/she is proficient in basic art techniques and technologies and is able to apply them as a teaching assistant.
According to previous experience, the majority of graduates of the Combined Art Education study programme go on to study for a Master's degree in Combined Art Education or related study programmes.
