Description of the Study program

By successfully completing the first stage of the study program, therapeutic pedagogy Bc. the student will receive a bachelor's degree (Bc.) and a qualification corresponding to level 6 according to the Slovak Qualification Framework (SKKR). Proof of qualification is a university diploma (1st degree), a state examination certificate and an addendum to the diploma.

On the basis of Decree no. 1/2020 Z. z. of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic on the qualification requirements of teaching staff and professional staff, in accordance with §2, paragraph 1 and Annex no. 6, point 1, a graduate of the first degree meets the qualification prerequisites for working in the profession of therapeutic teacher. In accordance with SKKR, a graduate of the first level of SP (level 6 of SKKR) will receive a qualification and will be qualified for employment and occupation in the profession of "healing teacher".

The study program of the first degree is also aimed at continuing to the master's degree and obtaining full qualifications to perform the work of a therapeutic pedagogue in category 767. Subsequently, there is the possibility of doctoral studies in the field of speech pathology and therapeutic pedagogy and in related fields. A graduate working in health services has the opportunity to obtain a specialization in the Specialization Study in Therapeutic Pedagogy (3 years) at SZU in Bratislava.

Competences, knowledge and skills of a bachelor's degree graduate, including transferable skills acquired during studies, enable employment in occupations requiring an adequate level of communication competences, social competences and knowledge, skills and competences of the graduate corresponding to level 6 of the Slovak Qualification Framework. (in public and state service, in charitable organizations, in non-state facilities that provide services to people in difficult life situations.

In addition to subjects from therapeutical pedagogy, the student's study plan also includes the basics of psychological, therapeutical, pedagogical and social fields, which will help the graduate to gain a holistic view of risks, disorders, diseases and conflicts and create a theoretical basis for understanding the problem and finding solutions for designing help. Interdisciplinarity, anchoring in the EU area, experiential teaching of therapeutically oriented programs, support of personal training (attitudes of respect and acceptance of a person, starting from where he is in development and experience, focusing on strengths, potentials and sources of coping, emphasis on values and meaningfulness, interactive offering of help, teamwork - these are the main characteristics of the field of therapeutic pedagogy. Compulsory subjects are usually supplemented by seminars, and in the case of therapeutic subjects, also by exercises. The number of students (usually one group) and spatial possibilities led to the choice of one recommended study path. The student has the option of choosing a smaller part of the compulsory subjects, which is not tied to the sequence, he has wider options within the compulsory optional subjects, according to his interest and assumptions, to focus on some area of therapeutic pedagogy. His interest is also taken into account when choosing a place for practice and when choosing a topic for the final thesis. The knowledge, skills and competences that the student will acquire are described in the graduate profile and in the information sheets for each subject. The subjects are aimed at building knowledge, abilities and skills for the performance of the profession with an emphasis on the classic areas of therapeutic pedagogy (the holistic picture of a person, prenatal development and prevention of disorders, early development and early intervention, developmental disorders and sensorimotor programs to support development, basal stimulation, disorders learning, neurodevelopmental disorders, behavioral disorders - concepts of help, health and its disorders - health and recovery support, psychiatric health disorders, psychosocial rehabilitation, accompanying, aging problems, dementia and support programs, palliative care. These areas are also covered by therapeutic subjects.

 

STUDY PLAN

Applicant requirements

The condition for the admission of applicants to the bachelor's degree in the therapeutic pedagogy study program is the completion of a complete high school education with a high school diploma. The required proof of education is an officially certified copy of the school leaving certificate.

The selection of applicants is based on the results of the talent entrance exam, while the results of secondary school studies are also partially taken into account. In this case, the weight of the entrance exam is min. ¾ of the total result of the admission procedure.

The entrance exam consists of two parts:

  • in the first part, the applicant completes an introductory interview about the motivation to study and his/her prerequisites for the field of therapeutic pedagogy. As part of the oral interview, the applicant will be faced with the task of managing the given situation through communication
  • in the second part, the talent prerequisites for the study of art, movement, music, literary-dramatic expression and skills of working with materials will be verified. The applicant will choose from these five options the two that he thinks he has the best chance of succeeding in.

For the entrance exam you will need:
* from art prerequisites - bring your own art works for demonstration. The applicant's task will be to creatively process 2 given topics (e.g. to depict an emotion, a situation with a given type of relationship);
* from the musical prerequisites - it is necessary to prepare a song for performance, to play a prepared composition - a piano is available (another musical instrument must be brought);
* from a literary-dramatic performance – to have a ready presentation of a piece of poetry or prose, or a sample of one's own work, to creatively handle improvisation according to a template;
* from the movement expression – bring comfortable clothes and shoes, prepare an expressive dance and one pantomime etude (for about 2 minutes each), portray the given theme, improvisation;
* skills in working with materials - bring 2 examples of current products with a description of the production, creatively use the offered material, work according to the instructions.
If the number of applicants is lower than the number of applicants the department planned to accept for the study program, the entrance exam will not be held.

Graduate profile

Preamble: The qualification characteristics of a graduate of study programs in the field of speech therapy and therapeutic pedagogy are based on international documents for higher education such as the Dublin descriptors, Fachqualifikationsrahmen Heilpädagogik (Qualification frameworks of therapeutic pedagogy, DE) as well as the National Qualification Framework of the Slovak Republic. The profile reflects international documents such as the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, the rights of patients. It is in accordance with the description of the Department of Speech Therapy and Therapeutic Pedagogy, with the Professional Standard of the Therapeutic Pedagogue as a Professional Employee (Instruction of the Minister of Education No. 39/2017, No. 18), with the Concept of Health Care in Therapeutic Pedagogy (file:///C:/ Users/pc/AppData/Local/Temp/vestnik-2006-08-31.pdf), with the Professional Profile of a therapeutic teacher approved by the PROLP Association of Therapeutic Teachers.
The graduate profile is characterized by the components of the study results of the department's programs: 

A. Knowledge and understanding
Objectives:

  • to acquire knowledge as a basis from one's own field and from related helping fields, the ability to analyze life situations and act professionally for the benefit of individuals/groups who are exposed to risks, have a health handicap, or are socially excluded and to cooperate with other experts in helping professions;
  • to accompany a person in a difficult life situation at any age, to know risks and potentials, coping resources,
  • know the possibilities and tools for offering formative experiences through movement, play, activities, art,
  • to gain knowledge about therapeutic and educational options to support the client in the context of health and further development,
  • to learn to communicate receptively and in an interactive relationship to support a person in his development and health 

 

B. Ability to acquire and interpret data (description, analysis and evaluation)

The aim is to teach:

  • identify the factors that caused, perpetuates, or alleviates a person's problem,
  • use the rule - first understand, then educate/help,
  • collect and evaluate data continuously and interactively,
  • consult the conclusions in the team, objectify the data and use them to design assistance

 

C. Competence to plan, implement and evaluate professional actions

The aim is to develop professional prerequisites:

  • know professional competences and tasks (toward prevention, remedial education, habilitation, making the possible real, rehabilitation)
  • strengthen/restore weakened functions and for reconstruction
  • building new prerequisites for perception, action, learning)
  • to learn how to apply known procedures in a way that is acceptable for the person in question considering age, situation, health problems, interests, circumstances and needs
  • teach to act professionally on the basis of a relationship, cooperation, during interesting activities, in an atmosphere of safety
  • to learn the ecosystem approach, to perceive a person as a unique being in relation to the environment
  • learn to focus on supporting participation (improving the competence to act), realizing values (developing potentials) and finding meaning (opportunities to apply)

 

D. Personality assumptions The goal is to increase personal prerequisites for the profession:

  • teach to understand helping as help for self-help, to respect the limits of competence, not to take the initiative where the person/patient can do it alone, to have respect and respect,
  • to be autonomous, open to possibilities, honest
  • in accordance with actions with attitudes and expression, patient, creative and responsible,
  • know the principles of psychohygiene, your limits, ask for help if necessary, know that you still need to work on your personal and professional growth.

Employment opportunities

The study program therapeutic pedagogy in the bachelor's degree is aimed at obtaining qualifications for the performance of work in the profession of therapeutic pedagogue. Although materials such as Concept of health care in therapeutic pedagogy (1996, 2006 amendment), Professional profile of a professional employee of a therapeutic pedagogue in education (2017) were adopted, the Statistical Classification of Occupations SK ISCO-08 does not include a therapeutic pedagogue by name, but graduates can apply as :

  • 2269 Specialists in therapeutical and educational care,
  • 23 Pedagogical and professional workers in education
  • 2352001 Educator of persons with special educational needs
  • 341 12 Professional worker in the field of social care

On the labor market, the graduate will be employed in several departments:

  • In the Ministry of Education as a professional employee - therapeutic pedagogue in schools and school facilities, also as a teacher's assistant.
  • In the health department as a therapeutic educator - especially in psychiatric departments. and treatment centers for children and adults, for the treatment of addictions, in sanatoriums for children and adults, in facilities for psychosocial rehabilitation, but also in wards for children, for the long-term sick. As a rule, as another therapeutic teacher for the graduate Mgr. or specialization study.
  • In the Department of Labor and Social Affairs as a therapeutic educator, especially in facilities such as Social Service Homes, facilities for seniors, in Family and Children's Centers, as a professional parent, as a worker at the Early Intervention Center.
  • In the Department of Justice as a therapeutic teacher, or an educator in detention and prison institutions.

In the third sector - in non-state facilities, low-threshold facilities, foundations, voluntary organizations, which are aimed at helping people in difficult situations.

Partnership organizations

In the therapeutic pedagogy study program (Bc.), pedagogical/professional practice subjects are included, in the provision of which professional employees participate in cooperation with contractual partners of the faculty, which are also used for other existing study programs. Practice teachers ensure the practical part of the educational activity, which is related to the school, social and health environment.

Theoretical, analytical and synthetic activities are carried out within the practical subjects Therapeutic Pedagogical Practice 1, 2, 3. The Faculty of Pedagogy of the Comenius University cooperates with the institutions in the framework of practical teaching on the basis of the Agreement on cooperation and provision of practical teaching for students of the Faculty of Medicine of the Comenius University concluded in accordance with valid legislative provisions. The Faculty of Pedagogy of the Comenius University has a contract with all workplaces where students do their internships. The organization of practice for PdF UK is ensured by the methodologist of the relevant department of PdF UK and the Department of Pedagogical and Professional Practices. Practical teaching at primary and secondary schools, where students do internships, is led by teachers with many years of practical experience in the given subject. In addition to practice facilities, the Department of Curative Pedagogy cooperates with the IGHB (International Society of Professional and Professional Curative Pedagogical Organizations), Palacký University in Olomouc, and the University of Suffolk in the framework of foreign cooperation. Within domestic organizations, it is primarily ProLP, Association of Therapeutic Teachers, Inklukoalícia, Society ŠLV. As part of bilateral cooperation, we have signed contracts with Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, Palacký University Olomouc, and Charles University in Prague.
