Description of the study program
The study program Social work largely copies the description of the core of the study field Social work.
Main topics of the core knowledge of the 1st level of higher education are tied primarily to social work as an academic discipline. The core includes:
- Socio-philosophical, ethical and andragogical foundations of Social work.
- Sociological foundations of Social Work (basic sociological terms, the science of society and social phenomena, structure and stratification of society, social change, theory of groups, values and norms, social deviations, socially undesirable phenomena, social solidarity).
- Psychological basics of Social Work (basics of general and social psychology, personality psychology, psychology of interpersonal communication, basics of counseling psychology).
- Training and practice in social work (training of congruence, ongoing exercises, assertiveness, self-knowledge, empathy, practice of experiences on oneself.
- Team member experience, supervisory experience, experience working with minorities and others).
- Theories and concepts of social work (stages of human life, penitentiary and post-penitentiary care, primary, secondary and tertiary prevention in SP, socio-pathological phenomena, addictions, work with youth, work with seniors, street work , work in non-governmental organizations of the third sector, solving ecological problems, lifestyle issues, quantitative and qualitative methods of social research.
- Legal and socio-economic foundations of Social Work (sources of law, constitutional law, criminal law, administrative law, social security law, family law, civil law, labor law, commercial law, trade law, corporate law, etc. )
- Professional experience.
The basic theoretical foundations of relevant scientific disciplines are compiled from: philosophical foundations, foundations of sociology, psychology, foundations of economics, law, demography, ethics, methodology of science and logic, foundations of scientific research, foundations of statistics and the historical context of the formation of social work as a scientific discipline. Theoretical and application basis of knowledge of social work are compiled on the basis of knowledge from the field of: history and development of social work, theories of social work, methods and forms of social work, risky social phenomena, evaluation and assessment in social work, social services, counseling and prevention, field social work, community social work, residential social work, social-legal protection and social guardianship, social policy, social projecting and evaluation of social programs, crisis intervention, social work with the family. Great emphasis is placed on social skills training, on supervision professional seminars and quality implementation of professional practice. In the study program, we strive for a balanced composition of subjects so that:
- proportionality was maintained in theoretical and practical knowledge,
- that this knowledge is based on presenting the current state of science,
- so that graduates are able to carry out the work of a social worker in practice and are able to continue fluently in the subsequent master's and later some also in doctoral studies,
- the ratio of lectures/seminars/exercises was maintained so that all pedagogues were involved in the pedagogical process and, under guidance (as part of the exercises), internal doctoral students were also involved,
- proportionality was maintained in the saturation of hours and credits during individual semesters,
- the number of guaranteed compulsory subjects was a maximum of 5 per 1 professor or docent,
- was the number of guaranteed compulsory optional subjects,
- the basic theoretical starting points of the relevant scientific fields were built at the beginning of the study and specific subjects from the field of social work from the middle of the study,
- to try to limit the selection of subjects with pre-requisites as little as possible.
The basic form of teaching in the bachelor's degree is lectures, seminars, exercises and professional practice. Lectures are usually led by professors and associate professors, exceptionally in the case of a specific activity (law, economics) also by assistant professors. Seminars are mainly led by assistant professors, and exercises are mainly conducted by assistant professors and under the supervision of full-time doctoral students. The exercises are mainly carried out in the form of social skills training, which are carried out in block classes and, due to their high efficiency, they traditionally have very good feedback among students. Individual trainings follow each other thematically and are always connected to a compulsory subject. Professional practice is also thematically focused and strictly monitored by the head of practice and a teacher at the school. Professional practice is supervised.
Requirements for selecting a candidate
Applicants are selected on the basis of the achieved results of secondary school studies. The final ranking of the applicants is determined according to the total number of points that the applicant obtains according to the results of the secondary school studies - matriculation exam. The faculty hereby ascertains the applicant's general readiness to handle the requirements of university studies.

It has specific criteria for accepting applicants, rules for the admission procedure, conditions for admission to a higher level of study, as well as criteria for progressing to the next part of the study. The criteria are regularly published in the usual way and are publicly available to the general public in sufficient time and on the basis of the deadlines established by law published for applicants. All criteria for a given SP, including detailed and specific criteria, are published on the faculty's website and are continuously available after their publication (https://www.fedu.uniba.sk/studium/pre-uchadzacov-o-studium/).
The procedure and rules for the admission procedure, transition to a higher degree or transfer to another program or another form of study within the UK are set out in the Study Regulations of the PdF of the UK (VP No. 1/2020).
