Description of the study program

The structure and content of the study program in Special Education fulfils the description of the study field 38. Teaching and Educational Sciences.
The knowledge, skills and competences acquired within this study program are in line with the core knowledge topics of the study field 38. Teaching and Educational Sciences.
The content correspondence of the study program with the relevant field of study is mainly created by the compulsory/profile subjects of the study plan in the components Common Pedagogical-Psychological, Methodological and Social-Scientific Component; Common Special Pedagogical Basis; and also in the Specialisation in Special Education component. The individual components and subjects are designed to cover proportionally the supporting themes of the core knowledge of the field of study, while the follow-up compulsory elective subjects further develop the knowledge, skills and competences that profile the graduate of the field of study. The compulsory subjects reflect the supporting themes of the core knowledge of the field of study as defined by the description and at the same time the current needs of teaching practice.

The study program is designed to provide comprehensive pedagogical, professional, methodical and methodological preparation of future special educators - educators for individuals with disabilities and disorders and teaching assistants. The disciplines presented in the program point to the necessary professional knowledge and data of general pedagogy, psychology, special pedagogy, from the individual specialisations of special pedagogy, from the theory of special education and from related disciplines.
The Special Education curriculum is designed into the following basic components:

The first component is the so-called united Pedagogical-Psychological, Methodological and Social-Scientific Component. It consists of both compulsory and volunteering courses. The student must obtain a total of 35 credits.

The second component are the subjects of the common special pedagogical bases. Courses of the Common Special Pedagogical Bases are compulsory. The credit allocation for the Common Special Education Bases courses is 2 to 5 credits. The student must earn a minimum of 67 credits. The special education foundation consists of both theoretical and practical subjects. The curriculum includes special education practicum experiences at schools and/or special education settings for individuals with varying types and degrees of disabilities. The total number of hours of student practice in the Bachelor's degree is 104.

The third part of the study program consists of the subjects of individual specializations of special education and their related disciplines. After completing the specialisation in special education, the student will receive 68 credits for the compulsory subjects.

The compulsory optional courses are structured into three groups according to content focus:

  • Group A - obtain a minimum of 2 credits (out of the 16 credits offered); the courses have a broader context; they are a selection of courses from the cognate disciplines in special education;
  • Group B - obtain a minimum of 4 credits (out of the 14 credits offered); the courses focus on therapies; this is a selection of therapies for special educators;
  • Group C - obtain a minimum of 4 credits (out of the 8 credits offered); the courses in this group consist of a selection of disciplines focused mainly on communication of the disabled.

The student also has the option of selecting optional, of which three are offered, each for 2 credits.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirement for applicants to the Bachelor's degree programme in Special Education is the completion of a full secondary education with a graduation certificate. The required proof of the acquisition of education is an officially certified copy of the matriculation certificate.
Applicants for the special education studies are admitted on the basis of the results of an entrance examination, which is held in front of an admissions board, also partly taking into account, the results of their secondary school studies. In this case, the entrance examination takes part of at least ¾ of the admission procedure total result. The admission examination shall be conducted by means of an oral interview. The oral interview will be conducted in front of a committee which will assess the applicant's general overview of the field of special education as well as the seriousness and high standard of the applicant's interest in the study of special education.
Since the level of communication is also important in the study program of special education as a basic interaction process of a future special educator, the level of content and formality of communication, especially spoken language, is also monitored during the admission interview.
Larger number of applicants than the expected number of applicants admitted to a given study program, the faculty reserves the right to select applicants according to the average of marks on the final examination. Applicants are admitted to a predetermined number of places.

Graduate Profile

Graduates of the bachelor's degree in the study programme of special education are able to understand the basic, essential facts, concepts, principles related to the interpretation of special-pedagogical phenomena and processes in general and to interpret special-pedagogical phenomena and processes through scientific language, they master the theoretical-philosophical bases that are necessary for the determination of goals. They acquire knowledge related to the theory of special education of the handicapped, basic methods, methodologies and techniques of special-pedagogical diagnostics and prognostics and are able to carry out an elementary diagnostic process. They master the basic special methods of educational rehabilitation and education of the disabled and disturbed with a focus on special education, they know how to compare and analyse them. They master the relevant parts of the content and procedural aspects of educational rehabilitation of the disabled and disturbed. They are able to apply the knowledge of auxiliary sciences in the interpretation of special education phenomena and processes in relation to the behaviour of individuals with special educational needs. They have theoretical and practical knowledge of the communication systems of the disabled and the possibilities of their use in the process of education and educational rehabilitation as well as in ordinary social and working life. In the field of practical skills, graduates acquire the ability to implement the educational process within special education or pre-primary education with the disabled in various organizational units. They are able to choose adequate educational methods in relation to specific diagnoses of pupils, choose and apply adequate methodologies of parts of the educational process. They know how to positively modify the behaviour of persons with special educational needs resulting from a disability or disorder. They can understand and explain special-pedagogical phenomena and processes in the field of pre-primary education and out-of-school education of the disabled, effectively apply preventive measures of behavioural disorders. They are able to advise parents and educators of children with disabilities also in the context of education of the disabled in integrated settings. They are familiar with the specifics of disability communication and use these in relation to the individual needs of individuals with disabilities. The profile of the graduate thus conceived ensures the graduate's readiness for employment in the free labour market in accordance with his/her prerequisites and the relevant legal standards.

Graduate Employment

In terms of compliance with Act No. 138/2019, the Act on Teaching and Professional Employees and on Amendments and Supplements to Certain Acts and with Decree No. 1/2020 Coll., the Act on Teaching and Professional Employees and on Amendments and Supplements to Certain Acts. on qualification requirements for pedagogical and professional staff, the graduate is prepared to work independently in a professionally qualified manner in the positions of pedagogical/professional staff (in the field of education and training focused on children, pupils and individuals with special educational needs resulting from different categories of health disadvantage and different age groups), in categories and subcategories:

  • pedagogical employee of a school, school establishment and class for children and pupils with special educational needs in the category of educator in schools and school establishments for children and pupils with special educational needs:

- educator at schools and school facilities for children and pupils with special educational needs.

  • pedagogical employee in the category of educator in institutions under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic

- educator in social protection and social curatorship institutions and in social services institutions,
- educator in a centre for children and families.
 

  • pedagogical employee in the category of pedagogical assistant:

- pedagogical assistant in special classes in mainstream schools and school establishments,
- pedagogical assistant (teaching assistant) in inclusive settings (individual inclusion of a pupil with SEN),
- pedagogical assistant (teaching assistant) in special schools,
- pedagogical assistant (teaching assistant) in inclusive conditions (individual inclusion of a pupil with SEN).

 

  • pedagogical employee of a school, school facility and class for children and pupils with special educational needs in the category of teacher of a school and school facility for pupils with special educational needs:

- teacher of kindergarten for children with special educational needs.
