About Me
I'm Tomáš Hlava, an anti-scholar1 and a knowmad2.
I work as a research fellow at the Center for Research of Didactics of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the Faculty of Education, Comenius University Bratislava (FEdu CU). I hold a PhD in didactics of foreign languages and literatures from FEdu CU.
In my research on SLA, I draw upon the ideas of cognitive linguistics. What fascinates me more than anything else is temporal cognition and its linguistic manifestations in language variability; in particular, its conceptualization and representation against the backdrop of embodied cognition and cultural influences, and their place in acquiring the TAM system of the native language and other languages.
I am involved in the bachelor's degree program, where I conduct seminars on English morphology and syntax, and I occasionally teach in the doctoral program, specifically about generative, cognitive, and systemic linguistics.

Research
The project I am currently immersed in revolves around identifying the inconsistencies in the lexical aspect of verbs across three distinct languages: Slovak, English, and Italian.
At its core, the study delves into the nuances of Vendler's classification, a cornerstone in second language acquisition (SLA) research for understanding verb aspect.
However, what sets this endeavor apart is its exploration of how the values of inherent or lexical aspects may fluctuate across different languages and cultures.
Over the past decades, numerous indices in scholarly papers, including works by Talmy, Tatevosov, Nishi and Shirai, have hinted at this variability,
prompting a deeper investigation into how linguistic and cultural contexts shape our understanding and employment of verb aspect, in my case across these three languages.
The phenomenon under scrutiny is made particularly intricate by the compositional nature of aspectual value within sentences, as highlighted by scholars such as Brinton, Verkuyl and Olsen.
By scrutinizing these variations, the project aims to yield outcomes of methodological value, particularly in the realm of second language acquisition research
and to inform our comprehension of cross-linguistic differences in lexical aspect.
