Description of the study program
The third degree of study in the social work study program focuses on narrower specializations and deepening of historical, theoretical-systematic and methodological knowledge and aspects of the professional training of an expert - researcher in the field of social work. In terms of content, structure and profile, the study is continuously linked to the 2nd level of education in the field of social work. In the field of study, social work focuses on selected problems in the issue of solving socio-pathological problems, as part of the educational trajectory, it draws knowledge from other interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary areas. The study deepens and develops current theories of social work and prepares and reflects on current issues of social policy, develops critical thinking in social work. Studying in the doctoral study program prepares graduates for teaching at universities, academic institutions and other platforms for researching social work issues at home and abroad. The choice of topic and professional orientation of the student have an individual character, while the study part emphasizes interdisciplinarity and a holistic approach to problem solving. The study ends with the defense of the dissertation.
Requirements for selecting a candidate
The selection of applicants is made on the basis of the results achieved in the admission procedure - entrance exam. The applicant should be a graduate of the 2nd degree of a master's degree in social work, or from other interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary fields. At the entrance exam, he must demonstrate the ability to independently formulate a scientific problem, bring his own solutions to problems, apply his professional knowledge in research and research practice. He must demonstrate the ability to creatively develop existing methodology within his professional specialization. Must demonstrate command of at least one foreign language at an adequate level.
Every academic year, PdF UK publishes information for study applicants according to the offer in the given academic year for all study programs in the usual way - on the faculty's website. It has specific criteria for accepting applicants, rules for the admission procedure, conditions for admission to a higher level of study, as well as criteria for progressing to the next part of the study. The criteria are regularly published in the usual way and are publicly available to the general public in sufficient time and on the basis of the deadlines established by law published for applicants. All criteria for a given SP, including detailed and specific criteria, are published on the faculty's website and are continuously available after their publication (https://www.fedu.uniba.sk/studium/pre-uchadzacov-o-studium/).
The procedure and rules for the admission procedure, transition to a higher degree or transfer to another program or another form of study within the UK are set out in the Study Regulations of the PdF of the UK (VP No. 1/2020).
Graduate profile
A graduate of the 3rd level of study in the social work study program finds ways of applying the results of research in the social field with a connection to practice and realizes this application himself. These are innovations in the field of new trends in the social field as well as solving social problems in society. He has a developed conceptual and categorical apparatus, he has mastered the interpretation methods of the field and is oriented in related disciplines, he is characterized by independent critical and analytical thinking, he has the ability to independently carry out specialized research and present its results. He can apply his professional knowledge in pedagogical practice, especially in the field of higher education.
Profile of a graduate of doctoral studies in field of study 33. Social work in the framework of the National Qualification Framework of the Slovak Republic includes three levels of educational outcomes such as:
- knowledge
- skills
- competencies
By successfully completing the third level of the social work study program, the student will receive the title of doctor (philosophiae doctor), PhD . and a qualification corresponding to level 8 according to the Slovak Qualification Framework (SKKR). Proof of qualification is a university diploma (3rd degree), a state examination certificate and an addendum to the diploma.
The study of doctoral studies in social work is understood as preparation for scientific activity in the field, or as the education of conceptual and leading workers in the field of social work at the level of state, regional, local and private institutions, organizations and platforms at home and abroad. The graduate is profiled as a scientist and innovator focused on solving new social and political phenomena with the prospect of further qualification growth. Based on the acquired knowledge and skills, a graduate of the 3rd level of study is qualified to work mainly in the following professions: independent researcher at an academic institution (universities, research institutes, etc.); senior worker, manager.
- A graduate of doctoral studies has extensive professional knowledge in several areas of the field of study, which serve as a basis for conducting research and creating new knowledge in the field of social work.
- The graduate has knowledge in the field of scientific research, science, as well as in the field of research. Attribution of a scientific text pays attention to the signs of criticality, moderation, accuracy and concreteness.
- He masters the types of research and can apply scientific methods according to them. He controls the ethical principles of verifying, evaluating and interpreting the obtained data. Controls statistical data evaluation software products.
- He knows how to create and assess the time, financial and personnel plan for the implementation of research projects. He is able to manage research and project teams and has mastered the professional administrative activities of a project manager. He knows how to navigate the methodology of project challenges of scientific agencies and framework operational programs for research and innovation. He controls the issue of national coordination of EU programs.
The graduate has extensive knowledge of the theory of social work science, social policy at the national and global level, scientific communication and communication of science, epistemology of science and research methodology and new trends in science and social work, which serve as a basis for conducting research and creating new knowledge in the field of social work. The graduate can choose and define basic and applied research methods in social work. He is able to recommend the professional knowledge from several areas of the field of study that are necessary for carrying out research and development and creating new knowledge in the field of social work. The graduate can formulate new hypotheses and strategies for further research and development of knowledge in the field of social work. He is able to identify current social problems, develop and implement an independent scientific project of basic and applied research, interpret the obtained results according to the current requirements of science and draw conclusions for the field and the solved scientific problem. He can formulate his own scientific findings in a scientific discussion, compare and interpret them in the context of current scientific knowledge and its trends, and apply scientific findings as proposals for current applied practice.
The graduate is characterized by independent, critical and analytical thinking, which he applies in changing conditions. It communicates the results of scientific work and publishes them in the scientific environment in the Slovak Republic and abroad. He applies ethical principles in scientific work. He can determine the focus of research and coordinate a team in the field of social work. The graduate is prepared to carry out scientific work and create concepts in the field of social work and social policy.
In accordance with the SKKR, a graduate of the first stage of the ŠP (level 6 of the SKKR) will obtain a qualification and be qualified for the following employment and profession:
- scientific researcher
- project manager
- social worker
- social worker at all levels of management of public and non-public social service providers.
Competences, knowledge and skills of a graduate of the doctoral degree, including transferable skills acquired during studies, allow to apply in occupations requiring an adequate level of communication competences, can plan and initiate the solution of complex problems and projects. He is able to assess and modify his own professional activity in a wider context, in relation to the long-term impact in of the given area and aspects of social , ethical , environmental and other criteria . _ _ _ _ _ _ He is able to communicate and is ready to formulate information on the results and achievements of scientific , research and development work on international level and manage large-scale research tasks and teams and has the knowledge, skills and competencies of a graduate corresponding to level 8 of the Slovak Qualification Framework
