Conditions of admission to study

Preschool and Elementary Pedagogy (Bachelor's Degree)

Applicants are selected on the basis of the results of the entrance examination, taking into account, in part, the results of their secondary school studies. Applicants will take an entrance examination in the form of an oral interview, which will take place in front of a board.

 

Teaching for Primary Education (Master's degree)

The admission requirements are:

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Preschool and Elementary Education, Teaching for Primary Education, or Teaching for Kindergartens and Education for School Clubs,
  • in the case of a larger number of applicants than the expected number of applicants admitted to a given study programme, the selection of applicants is carried out.

Applicants are selected: on the basis of the results of the entrance examination, which consists of two parts:

  • The written part consists of a short dictation from the Slovak language and simple tasks to test the level of critical and logical thinking. The aim of the dictation is to test the candidates' knowledge of grammatical and spelling principles of the Slovak language. Other tasks will test the ability to use elementary mathematics to solve simple practical situations.
  • The oral part consists of an interview with the members of the committee, which will assess the level of communication focused on:
  • a general overview of the candidate's background in pre-primary and primary education,
  • the seriousness and depth of interest in studying primary education teaching, which will be assessed on the basis of the applicant's motivation letter. (The applicant will bring his/her motivation letter with him/her on the day of the oral interview.

Dear students, applicants for studies at the Department of Pre-primary and Primary Education of the Faculty of Education of Comenius University, welcome to our website.

Our Department has a long tradition in preparing future teachers of kindergartens (pre-primary/preschool pedagogy), primary schools (primary pedagogy) and school clubs.

Our department is part of the Institute of Educational Sciences and Studies and covers the study of preschool and elementary pedagogy. The diploma you will receive is highly accepted not only in Slovakia but also abroad.

A graduate of our department will gain theoretical knowledge, professional competences, as well as practical experience in teaching practice, which will be used in the teaching profession. A graduate of pre-school and elementary pedagogy is able to design teaching, create school educational programs, evaluate the teaching process and educational progress of pupils, plan leisure activities and implement teaching in pre-school education institutions, schools and in leisure activities facilities (school children's club, leisure time centre) for children of younger school age.

Graduates of the study programme are eligible to work as: 

  • teacher of pre-primary education,
  • teacher of primary education, 
  • assistant teacher of primary education,
  • teacher educator,
  • methodological worker for pre-school education institutions and leisure-time activity facilities,
  • specialist in primary pedagogy,
  • methodologist for pre-primary and primary education,
  • specialised state administration worker for the education and training of children in the pre-primary period and pupils of younger school age.

The study of pre-school and elementary pedagogy consists of a Bachelor's and a Master's degree. More detailed information can be found in:
