The study programme Teaching of Slovak Language and Literature (in combination) at the Bachelor's degree level in both full-time and part-time form provides students with a systematic and comprehensive education in the field of contemporary Slovak language and literature.
The compulsory courses Introduction to Language Study, Introduction to Literature Study and Production of Professional Text in Slovak Language and Literature develop, deepen and shape students' knowledge and skills related to linguistic and literary research and production of professional text in linguistics and literary science. The compulsory subjects in the field of Slovak language form a coherent and comprehensive body of knowledge about the system and norm of contemporary standard Slovak in all its levels (sound, lexical, morphological, syntactic, stylistic) and about the codified form of contemporary standard Slovak. The compulsory subjects in the field of Slovak literature form a coherent and comprehensive body of knowledge about the history of Slovak literature of the 20th century and about literature for children and young people, as well as about world literature. The composition of the compulsory subjects also takes into account the situating of knowledge of contemporary Slovak language and literature in an intercultural context and in a broader international context, both diachronically and synchronically.
Compulsory elective courses consolidate and develop students' knowledge and skills and focus on their application in the educational process. They are divided into 2 groups covering the field of Slovak language (group 1) and literature (group 2). The compulsory elective courses of the first group develop knowledge of about the lexical, morphological and syntactic level of the contemporary Slovak language and related skills with a focus on application in school practice, in a communicative-presentational context and in proofreading and editing. The second group of compulsory elective courses develops knowledge of the construction of a literary text, the use of literature in the education of children and young people, as well as of Slovak literature and book culture after 1989, and develops reading, analytical-interpretive and evaluative skills with an emphasis on their application in school practice. Part of the compulsory elective courses (World Literature II, Contexts of European Cultural Thought) covers the overlap of knowledge about contemporary Slovak language and literature into intercultural contexts and the broader international context on both diachronic and synchronic levels.
The synergy of the compulsory elective courses from the first, language, and second, literary group is demonstrated in particular in the development of communication and presentation skills, as well as reading, analytical-interpretation and evaluation skills when working with a selected range of literary works by Slovak authors of the 20th and early 21st centuries, as well as works of literature for children and young people and world literature. The didactic application of linguistic and literary knowledge and professional practices is also an essential part of the course in order to prepare for further study in the study programme and to qualify for the professions in which the graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme can be employed.
In terms of the uniqueness of the study programme and its originality in terms of its focus and educational outcomes, the key focus is on a thorough knowledge of the system of the contemporary standard Slovak language and a reliable orientation in the knowledge of contemporary Slovak literature, literature for children and youth and world literature with regard to the relevant practical skills and competences, especially applicable in educational practice, as well as in other areas in which the graduate can be employed. Emphasis is placed on linking contemporary, including the most up-to-date linguistic and literary knowledge with the field of contemporary language and literature as a complex of knowledge, skills and competences which, through their connection to lively school, communication and cultural and social practice, form a key factor in the cultivation of the professional, occupational and cultural identity of today's young people. The emphasis on children's and young people's literature and on world literature stems from the extent to which they are represented in the content of lower and upper secondary education.
This concept of the Bachelor's degree programme provides the student with the knowledge, skills and competences crucial for further study at the Master's degree level. This corresponds to the primary focus of the Bachelor's degree programme to prepare the graduate to continue his/her studies in the Master's degree programme with the intention of preparing him/her for the teaching profession corresponding to the current needs of school practice.
