ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Basic information

Applicants are accepted on the basis of the results of a written entrance examination while taking into account the results of their secondary education. The weighting of the entrance examination shall be at least ¾ of the total result of the admission procedure.

The written examination shall consist of questions related to the following areas:

English grammar
English vocabulary, including phraseology and phrases
English pronunciation

Applicants are expected have the command of English language corresponding to the B2 level (according to the CEFR, i.e. upper-intermediate, or Cambridge First Certificate).

Exceptions

Applicants who meet at least one of the following criteria will be considered to have passed the Department’s English Language Entrance Examination and will be granted marks equivalent to the maximum marks obtained in the written examination:
  • completion of the B2 English leaving examination (maturita), with a score of at least 75% in the external part (not more than 3 years old), or completion of the C1 English leaving examination (maturita)*;
  • submission of one of the internationally recognised standardised certificates: Cambridge First Certificate (no more than 3 years old), Cambridge Advanced Certificate (no more than 4 years old) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) (no more than 5 years old);
  • completion of the TOEFL test with a minimum score of 90 (not older than 2 years);
  • completion of the IELTS Academic, or IELTS General Training test - Band Score minimum 6 (not older than 2 years);
  • completion of the CITY and GUILDS test at the B2 level, focusing on all four language skills - writing, reading, listening and speaking (no more than 3 years old);
  • completion of the General or Vocational State Language Examination (not older than 3 years);
  • completion of the Basic State Language Examination with a mark of 'Distinction' (1) (not more than 3 years old).

Applicants shall include a certified copy of the certificate with their application, which must be sent to the Faculty of Education, Comenius University Bratislava as soon as the examination has been passed, but no later than 14 June 2024. Applicants shall also submit the relevant proof of the fulfilment of the criteria to the supervisors of the entrance examination.
*Conditions will be modified depending on the conditions and criteria of the school leaving examinations in the 2023/24 school year, as well as any changes in standardised testing.
The Admissions Committee reserves the right to give individual consideration to international diplomas/certificates in English at the B2 level which are not specified above.
