The Department of Slovak Language and Literature offers Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in teaching Slovak language and literature in combination with other subjects, some of them provided in cooperation with other faculties of Comenius University (Evangelical Theological Faculty, Faculty of Natural sciences and Faculty of Physical Education and Sports). The study is organized in a full-time or external form.
The study programme contains linguistic, literary and didactic disciplines, equally theoretically and practically oriented. Linguistic disciplines cover fonology, fonetics, lexicology, morphology, syntax, stylistics, orthoepy, orthography, development of the Slovak language, dialectology. Among literary disciplines, there is literary science, comparatistics, Slovak literature ranging from the oldest to modern literature, literature for children and youth, world literature, analysis and interpretation of literary texts. The emphasis is laid also on a quality training of future teachers, interdisciplinary communication and the consistent implementation of the latest scientific knowledge into the teaching process.
Graduates are prepared to be predominantly teachers of the Slovak language and literature in lower-secondary and upper-secondary schools, but they can work also as teacher’s assistants, language editors or correctors, and they prove competent in areas where expertise in the Slovak language is requested (e.g. print and other mass media, cultural and educational institutions).
Within lifelong education, the department offers study programmes with a major in teaching the Slovak language and literature for practicing teachers to extend their qualification.
In the field of the theory of teaching Slovak language and literature the department confers the academic degree PaedDr. (Doctor of Pedagogy).
