Department of Speech Therapy
Department of Speech Therapy of the Institute of Psychological and Speech-Therapeutic Studies guarantees at present the field of study speech therapy in the study program speech therapy. The program was accredited in 2009 and is valid till the next complex accreditation. Full-time master study takes five years. Doctoral study with the accreditation up to 31.8.2014 takes four years in full-time studies and five years in external studies. The department has the right to conduct habilitation procedure and procedure for appointment of professor without time limit. Besides, the department has also the right to realize rigorous exams (PhDr.). It also provides teaching of speech therapy for all other students of the Faculty of Education in accordance with their study programs. The department of speech therapy is the only one of this kind in Slovakia. In 2003 and in 2006 it was ranked among the leading scientific workplaces of Comenius University. The model of the study (in all three degrees) is by the Standing Liaison Committee of Speech and Language Therapists in EU (CPLOP) evaluated as being optimal and comparable with the recognized world´s study programs of speech therapy.
Scientific and research activities of the department has a continual character. Its members are dealing with domestic and foreign grants the results of which are accepted not only at home but also abroad. They are aimed at and map their scientific-research profile, as well as their specific focus in the study program and clinical orientation. The research results are currently included in the teaching of courses. Thus is ensured a permanent implementation of the latest scientific, methodological and methodical knowledge in the teaching process as well as the close link between scientific and educational activities of the department. The students are actively involved in the solution of the research tasks in form of semester works, diploma and doctoral works, they receive thus the latest theoretical knowledge and creatively implement them in theory and practice of the speech therapy.
The graduates of the study program Speech therapy can work:
In the field of healthcare: as the speech therapists in ambulances of policlinics, in hospitals at the clinics and clinic departments, in private speech therapists´ facilities, etc.
In educational system: as school speech therapists in special kindergartens and special primary schools including schools for pupils with communication disorders, in elementary schools as professionals – school speech therapists in centers of special-educational counseling and prevention and in centers of educational-psychological counseling and prevention.
In the field of labor and social affairs: according to the needs and requirements from the homes of social services within the framework of the speech-therapeutic care.
In private and other facilities providing the speech-therapeutic care.
As the study program Speech therapy is in all its three degrees in accordance with the Bologna declaration, it enables not only the mobility of students during their study period but also a broad realization in the labor market in Europe as well as abroad.
