Department of Slovak Language and Literature
The Department of Slovak language and literature by providing study programs in Training for teachers of Slovak language and literature in combination with other academic subjects or arts education significantly contributes to preservation and further development of the field of the Slovak language and literature being one of the most important areas of the Slovak national culture in the broad context of the European and world culture. The emphasis is laid on a quality training of future teachers, complexity of the scientific discipline Slavonic, interdisciplinary communication and the consistent implementation of the latest scientific knowledge into the teaching process what significantly enriches the process of student training.
The study program is built as combination of two academic subjects, interdisciplinary study with the teaching of artistic-educational and educational subjects and interfaculty study program Religious education and Training for teachers of the Slovak language and literature offered in cooperation with the Evangelical Theological Faculty of Comenius University.
The study program Training for teachers of the Slovak language and literature in combination can be studied on the first and second levels of university study - bachelor and master study programs. A graduate of the bachelor study can work as a teacher´s assistant especially in primary schools, minority schools, educational and training facilities, as a language editor or corrector, as an administrative and methodical worker. A graduate of the master study is eligible to teach on the second level of primary schools (school years 5 – 9) and in secondary schools. A graduate may also act as a specialized worker in public administration for the area of education, in the areas of social practice in which knowledge of Slovak language is required (e.g. work in print media, mass communication means, cultural and educational institutions, the third sector).
In the Department of the Slovak language and literature there is also realized qualifying continuing education for teachers of primary and secondary schools who are interested in gaining a further qualification – Slovak language and literature.
The Department of the Slovak language and literature belongs among the oldest workplaces of the Faculty of Education. A number of prominent personalities of the Slovak literary science and linguistics are present at the department: prof. Mária Bátorová, DrSc.; prof. Ondrej Sliacky, CSc.; prof. PhDr. Ján Kačala, DrSc.; prof. PhDr. Ivor Ripka, DrSc.; as Professor Emeritus cooperates with the Department also prof. PhDr. Vincent Blanár, DrSc.
The members of the Department participate in the research areas of linguistics, literary science and teaching of mother tongue. Regularly are organized conferences, scientific symposia and colloquia. In cooperation with the departments of foreign languages of the Faculty of Education the department participates in publishing of the scientific proceedings Philologia. The department members were coordinators of several grant projects.
The department cooperates with all university Slovak language workplaces in Slovakia, it has international contacts with many Slavonic workplaces. At the same time it cooperates with partner institutions of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and with the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic. The department members are the members of the scientific associations of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, they participate as members of the commissions for defense of the doctoral and rigorous works and they are members of commissions and opponents in habilitation and inauguration procedures at several universities. They work in the common commissions for doctoral studies and they are members of scientific boards at different faculties and universities. Several members of the department act as lectors of the Slovak language in abroad.
