THE INSTITUTE OF PHILOLOGICAL STUDIES

The Institute of Philological Studies of the Faculty of Education is a scientific-research workplace focused on the basic and applied research in the field of linguistics, literary science and didactics of English, German, Slovak language and Romance languages and literatures. The institute brings together researchers of the Faculty of Education engaged in scientific research of language and literature in the area of English, German, Romance and Slavonic languages, didactics of language and literature, comparison of language and literature development. The effort is aimed at the implementation of all recent theoretical facts into the practical teaching of foreign languages.

Pedagogical workplaces of the Institute are the Department of English language and literature, Department of German language and literature, Department of Romance languages and literatures and the Department of Slovak language and literature. Pedagogical staff of these departments constantly implements the research results into the learning process emphasizing at the same time the synthesis of knowledge and skills.

Department of English language and literature is providing accredited study programs of training for teachers of the English language and literature not only in combination studies built as a combination of two academic subjects or interdisciplinary study with teaching of art subjects, but also as a single subject both for bachelor and master studies. At the same time it prepares the study program of teaching the English language and literature for primary education.

Department of German language and literature is providing accredited bachelor and master study of academic subjects German language and literature (in combination), and German language and literature (single subject study) in full-time as well as external forms of study.

Department of Romance languages and literatures offers bachelor and master study of  training for teachers of the French language and literature in combination and the Spanish language and literature in combination, but also a single subject study in the field foreign languages and cultures in two study programs French language and culture and Spanish language and culture (BA programs) and  Romance languages and cultures (MA programs).

Department of Slovak language and literature offers BA and MA study programs in teaching the Slovak language and literature in combination.  The department is covering also the courses of Slovak language and literature in the study program pre-school and elementary education.

All departments are providing PhD. studies in didactics of foreign languages and literatures, qualification continual studies for elementary and secondary school teachers and have the right to do rigorous exams for the titles PaedDr., PhDr.

In the departments are at present many prestigious linguists, literary scholars, translators, foreign lecturers. Members of the departments are cooperating in various national scientific projects (VEGA, KEGA, APVV) and international projects (Socrates, Tempus, Phare, Comenius, Leonardo da Vinci) and Comenius University Research Grants. Quality of their scientific work confirms not only presentation of the results through publication outputs, organizing conferences, scientific symposiums, seminars and colloquia, but also domestic and international response. Research results of the Institute staff are regularly published in the scientific proceedings Philologia. Department of English language and literature annually issues the journal Studies in Foreign Language Education. Departments and their members are constantly cooperating with other Slovak and foreign workplaces (Slovak Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Culture, LIC Bibiana) and with cultural and educational  institutions.

Teachers and students of the departments make use of mobility programs (mainly LLP Erasmus) with high number of outgoing and incoming students and teachers.

Graduates have a wide range of possibilities in the labour market first of all as qualified teachers in primary and secondary schools. They can also work in other areas of social life as interpreters, translators, editors, language supervisors, correctors, in mass media, in cultural institutions, in the third sector, foreign departments of the state administration, in the European and world´s institutions, etc.
