INSTITUTE OF HUMANITIES
The aim of the Institute of Humanities is a free, interdisciplinary research in the field of humanistic sciences. It makes use of the potential and experience of its three departments. Therefore the research of the institute is able to cover a wide area of human activities. It is combining results of philosophical, humanistic, historical and biological sciences focused on man in time and space. The intention in future is also to provide the whole faculty with recommendations for improving teacher training.
DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY
Department of Biology provides courses in the study program training for teachers of biology (double-subject study) on bachelor’s and master’s university degree. The study program is designed for two-subject study. It is combinable with the study groups of teaching of academic subjects, art subjects, or with a group of special-educational study courses. The students are being trained as teachers of elementary and secondary schools or university lecturers. Besides the field of education the graduates are able to find jobs in various non-governmental organizations, as lecturers in Slovak Academy of Sciences, professionals in botanic gardens, national parks, or in administration of Ministry of Environment.
DEPARTMENT OF ETHICS AND CIVICS EDUCATION
Department of Ethics and Civics Education were established in 1990. It prepares particularly teachers of ethics and civics education in combination with other study subjects on bachelor’s and master’s university degrees. The students are being trained as teachers of ethics and civics on the second degree of elementary school, in all types of grammar and secondary schools. The graduates are able to work in school’s youth clubs, in administration of Ministry of Education or in non-profit organizations. The department teaches also philosophy, political studies, cultural studies and ethics disciplines in general for all students of study programs aimed on training for teachers of the Faculty of Education and for other fields of study. It is focused on interdisciplinary research of various aspects of an individual´s value orientation and citizenship, its distinctive feature is the long-term research of teacher´s professional competencies in accordance with the needs of teaching practice. The department organizes every two years international conferences.
DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY
Department of History was established in 1992. The department implements training for teachers of history both on bachelor and master level combinable with other study programs focused on training for teachers, either of academic subjects or music or visual arts. Study programs provide teaching of all historical disciplines. Specific focus is on the didactics of history and regional history. The students are being trained as teachers for elementary and secondary schools. Graduates can work in professional and scientific workplaces (archives, museums, libraries, culture centers) as well as in research of regional history (history of towns and villages), etc.
The department has until now organized many international conferences on history didactics, the role of a personality in history, denomination, problems of historic memory, issues of integration and disintegration. It actively cooperates in writing of history textbooks for primary and secondary schools.
