THE INSTITUTE OF ARTS EDUCATION STUDIES

Institute of Arts Education Studies consists of the two departments: Department of Visual Arts Education and Department of Music Arts Education.

Department of Visual Arts Education offers accredited study programs in bachelor's and master's degrees for single-subject and combined studies in the field of training for teachers of visual arts. Besides, it is possible to continue in the rigorous procedure (PaedDr.) and in the accredited third doctoral level of university study (PhD). The department participates with the Faculty of Philosophy of Comenius University in Bratislava in teaching at the University of the Third Age in the field of History and Theory of Art. Department has prepared a complex study program for primary school teachers offering further education for pedagogues in the area of visual art program as well as the first and second attestation for teachers in the area of visual art. The programs consist of classic art disciplines as drawing, painting, graphics, sculpture, photography and new media. Program also includes courses dealing with history of art culture and didactics of art education. The concept of the offered study programs is based on the current view of fine arts, its status and function in society. In a long term it aims to link with the rich artistic tradition of society as well as with the traditions of the regions at the same time accentuating the current trends in art and innovations in teaching. The main objective of teaching is to provide high quality education to students who as pedagogues will impart knowledge to their pupils in primary schools and in primary schools of art.

Department of Music Arts Education offers the bachelor’s and master’s degree single-subject or combined full-time study programs in the field of training for teachers of music arts and it provides also a rigorous procedure in related academic fields. External studies are at present realized only in one year but increasing demands especially of pedagogues from primary schools of art open an opportunity for offering further additional or continual education. The study program includes complex musical theoretical, musical pedagogical and musical art courses. In the field of artistic courses the focus is on teacher training in singing, playing instruments, e. g. piano, violin, viola, flute, clarinet, guitar and trumpet. Although many of the students are often members of various types of professional orchestras, the goal is first of all to train music education teachers professionally well prepared in all aspects – development of teaching skills, sufficient theoretical basis of study, to achieve an optimum balance between the artistic, pedagogical and theoretical fields of training. The Department cooperates in projects “New Music for Kids” and “Veni Academy” for primary schools and music conservatories. Integral parts of the department are the choir Comenius and the orchestra Collegium Musicum Comeniana that are representing the department in various prestigious cultural events.
