Bratislava, 3 April 2017: The 2017 Comenius Book Collection received 1928 books for children and young people, 22 DVDs with fairy tales, and CDs with children’s songs as a part of celebrations for Book Month at Comenius University in Bratislava.

The collection took place at all Comenius University faculty libraries (twelve in Bratislava and one in Martin) from 13 to 24 March 2017.

The largest contribution came from Martin’s Jessenius Faculty of Medicine, which collected 588 books. This was thanks to the enormous contribution of one person, Ľubica Červeňová, who is the faculty’s secretary. She contributed 384 books to the collection drive. The top student contributor was Monika from the Faculty of Arts, who donated 37 books.

The collected books included fairy tales and other children’s stories, youth fiction, detailed encyclopaedias, foreign-language children’s literature, card games (Concentration), and colouring books. Children from children’s homes, hospitals, and other social facilities will also greatly enjoy the DVDs and CDs. The Comenius Book Collection was enriched with complete Disney collections (Pocahontas, The Lion King, Bambi, Cinderella, Snow White, Aladdin, Winnie-the-Pooh, and others), as well as collections of the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings series. "The faces of some of the student donors betrayed a certain difficulty in parting with some of the books; it was as if they wanted to stroke them just one more time and wish them luck with their new owner. A lovely surprise was the addition of a stuffed elephant," said Daniela Gondová, the head of Comenius University’s Academic Library.

The collected books were distributed to a number of social facilities, including Bratislava Children’s Hospital, the Sibírka Social Services Home for Children and Adults, the Rosa Social Services Home for Children and Rehabilitation Centre, the Fortuna Social Residence Home, the Kopčany Residence Home, and the Children’s and Social Services Home in Martin.

"I am sure that our little patients will be overjoyed by the books, and even though they are hospitalized they will find fairy-tale heroes with whom they can, if only for a moment, forget about their illness," said Associate Professor Ladislav Kužela, the General Manager of Bratislava Children's Hospital, in praise of the significance and value of the Comenius Book Collection. He kindly thanked Comenius University for the collected books.

The 2017 Comenius Book Collection was built upon a 2011 pilot project of collecting children’s literature. As in 2011, this year’s event was held in partnership with the Ikar publishing house.

"Thanks to all of those who contributed to this charitable event and helped bring joy and knowledge to children who are ill or otherwise in need," said Comenius University Rector, Professor Karol Mičieta.
